What Vacation?

I’m never on vacation anymore...

It may seem otherwise, but let me explain. In the recent weeks, I got to share adventures with a few friends. I was very much upfront about the fact that I work a solid 25-30 hour week. Doesn’t seem like a lot for an average American or a small business owner, but trust me - when balance is the goal and you make a legit commitment to yourself, you don’t waste time on stupid shit. Work always gets done first, then adventure. That has become my norm. If I’m wasting hours scrolling away on social media or procrastinating, that time is coming out of my “fun” bank.

But back to the story. I gave full disclosure about having to fit in work every morning and there was mutual understanding, but in execution things are never that smooth. People got very annoyed because to them this was “vacation” and to me it was just another day.

But here is the thing... why do you need ME around to go have fun? Just because we came together, doesn’t mean we need to spend every waking moment of the way in each other’s space. That clinginess bothers me somehow. I got to do work, here are the keys, go do your thing, come get me at 2 pm. Is that asking for too much?

I’m not sharing to throw anyone under the bus or to complain. I’m just pondering the irony out loud.

Being a self-sufficient human, I don’t ever put things on hold because I have no one to share them with. My happiness is my own responsibility. No one can supplement that for me, although it’s nice to have those who fill our cups over the brim with their magnificent presence.

If I ever relied on others to feel secure about my needs and wants, I certainly wouldn’t be living this awesome life of mine.

So this brings me to a little PSA: get comfortable with solitude. Even better, enjoy those moments when you get to be fully in charge of how you feel, what you do and whatever cards are handed to you today. It’s fucking empowering, guys! Try it and stop waiting on others, any one at all, to tag along with you.

When you begin to master the art of life, you don’t need a vacation 💡
